We chose the Ayana Resort and Spa in Bali after a lot of discussion on where to stay. Because Bali has been a great destination for such a long time, there are so many beautiful resorts to choose from. I wanted to stay somewhere on the ocean, in a quieter area, but close to the city if we wanted to get out for the day.
The Ayana is in Jimbaran, in the south of Bali. The location was beautiful, although it took a long time to get to other areas of the island due to the traffic (too many people, cars and mopeds - small and few roads).
The Ayana Resort Grounds
The Ayana Grounds are beautiful. As this was our week to relax on our Asia Vacation. We had just spend 2 weeks touring around Macau, Hong Kong and Singapore.
We arrived at night so didn't really get the beauty of the resort. Our butler (butler service comes with the villas) promised to pick us up the next morning and take us on a tour of the resort.
We saw the private beach, you have to take a bus or golf cart to get to it and walk down (and back up) over 200 steps. You can take a packed lunch with you as you won't be able to go back to the main resort for lunch. The guys in charge of the area were really sweet and nice. The currents are quite strong, so I don't know if I would recommend swimming there.
Then there was the spa, main pool, the Cliffside pool and the kids pool.
It really is a beautiful property, although parts are looking a little dated. It was orginally built as a Ritz Carlton, and they sold it once it hit about 12 years old, to the Ayana. They haven't updated very much, and you can see it. Having said that it is still a beautiful resort, especially the areas on the Cliff like the Rock Bar and the Cliff side pool.
In fact one of our favorite spots was the Cliffside pool.
Overall the staff were great. We really enjoyed meeting them and their service.
Restaurants and Bars
The Rock Bar is famous all over the island of Bali, with good reason. It is one of the best locations for the sunset, and the drinks and food are good too. People from all over the island come for a drink at sunset. It is located almost at the bottom of the cliff and you have to take a inclinator down to the bar. Once there you will be seated. However the line ups start really early , some people waited over 90 minutes and missed the sunset completely. As hotel guests we didn't have to wait in the lines and got a table without a problem - a great perk with the hotel.
We also ate at and really enjoyed Sami's Italian and Honzen, the Asian restaurant. Honzen had amazing Korean BBQ and Sami's had great pizzas, pastas and salads.
Kisik Bar and Grill
We had one of the best meals ever at teh Seafood restaurant, Kisik Bar and Grill, and then had one of the worst meals we ever had when we went back. It was strange. Kisik is fun as you get to watch the sunset (reserve for 6 pm)and pick your food out before it's cooked. On our second attempt they ran out of lobsters and other seafood.
