Lantau Island and the Giant Buddha Day Trip from Hong Kong was one of our favorite days in Asia. I will be honest, some of it can be seen as quite touristy (like the fact that there is a Starbucks in Ngong Ping Village) but for the most part we really enjoyed this tour.
You will be picked up at your hotel (confirm with the local tour operator) and then ferried across Hong Kong's Harbour to Hong Kong's largest Island, Lantau Island. You will then board an air conditioned coach that will take you to one of Hong Kong's beautiful beaches (I was excited to at least put my toe in the South China Sea - checked another ocean off my list!). You will drive through the beautiful mountains and valleys and visit Tai O, a traditional fishing village (we loved this too!) and see the homes built on stilts.
Next you will continue on to the Ngong Ping Plateau and visit the beautiful and majestic Gienat Buddha. It stands more that 111 feet or 34 meters high and is the worlds largest, seated, outdoor Buddha. It truly is spectacular!
You will then have time to tour the beautiful and inspiring Po Lin Monastery and enjoy a traditional Buddhist vegetarian lunch (We couldn't believe how good it was!) and then a visit to the Ngong Ping Village (this was the really touristy part - could have done without it - but hey it's part of the tour).
You will end your tour on Lantau Island by taking the cable car ride down the mountain (this was really cool too!) It is a 25 minute 5.7 km ride that gives you incredible views of the South China Sea, the mountains and valleys and the Giant Buddha.
Tips about the Tour
You will be picked up at your hotel around 8:00 am and the tour is approximately 8 hours. Make sure you confirm with the local tour operator. It's a great tour for kids, but not recommended for elderly or disable guests due to the restricted access of the ferry boat and Ngong Ping Cable car.
