The Ngong Ping 360 Cable car experience is a really cool 25 minute, 5.7 km cable car ride that takes you from the town of Tung Chung on Lantau Islands North Coast to the Ngong Ping Village where the Giant Buddha stands proudly on top of the mountain.
The views of the South China Sea, the Giant Buddha, North Lantau Country Park, the mountains of Lantau Island and the Hong Kong Airport are spectacular.
There are different ways to experience the cable car ride. You can go to Tung Chung Station on Lantau Island and take the cable car up to the Village and return on the cable car. Or you can take a tour of Lantau Island which includes a visit to a traditional fishing village, lunch at the Po Lin Monastery (which is really good!) and a visit to a beach.
- Regular Cabin with other passengers. This is the most common way to take the cable car ride. Least expensive option. - Crystal Cabin - has a glass bottom floor to give you new perspectives of the views. It is more expensive but the line ups are shorter. - Private regular cabin - You can rent out a cabin for your party for about $2400 HK$ - no line ups and it includes a few of the attractions in Ngong Ping Village - Private Crystal Cabin - same as a regular cabin tour but with a Crystal Cable Car.
Getting There
You can take the MTR to Tung Chung Station from Central in Hong Kong. It takes approximately 30 minutes and the Tung Chung Cable Car station is a 2 minute walk away.
You can take a tour of Lantau Island which will usually include a ride down from Ngong Ping Village to Tung Chung Station.
You can drive there, check with your hotel for directions. Or take a taxi (taxi fares depend on where you start and range from $195 HK$ to $280 HK$.)
Opening Hours
Weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm Weekends from 9 am to 6:30 pm
If you want to get there when it opens, get there early as the line up can take over a hour just to buy tickets. Or purchase them online. Or choose the Crystal Bottom cable car. It is more expensive but the line is shorter.
Our Experience
We LOVED the cable car. We did a tour of Lantau Island and took a bus to Ngong Ping Village with stops along the way, then took the cable car back down to Tung Chung Station to meet a bus to take us back to Kowloon. We loved it so much we may go back on our next trip to Hong Kong.
