Enjoying a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel, is an excellent vacation idea when visiting.
We enjoyed the drink, well actually 2 of them. Warren and I made sure that we visited the Long Bar and partook in the drink that originated here. Even I had one, and I don't drink alcohol.
This certainly is a among one of the most popular attractions because while we were there, the only people that were there were tourists. I don't even thing there were any guests of the Raffles Hotel there.
When we visited in July of 2011, we wanted a drink after a long day of shopping in the heat on Orchard Road. We were staying at the Fairmont, which is right across the street from the Raffles Hotel. I suggested that we had to try this cocktail for our afternoon drink and cool off. It didn't take much to twist Warren's arm. So off to the Raffles we went.
My first surprise was how the Raffles Hotel is not open to the public, even to enter the lobby you must be a "resident" aka hotel guest. I can understand why as I am sure that I am only part of the hundreds of people a day that would want to visit the world famous hotel.
So now we had to figure out where the Long Bar was, without going through the hotel. They didn't make this easy if you arrive at the front door of the Raffles.
We went to the left from the front door and saw a sign saying Long Bar on the second floor. But you couldn't access stairs or elevators until you went to the back corner of the hotel. It was a pleasant walk however, as the grounds and shops of Raffle are beautiful.
We found the Long Bar and walked up the stairs. Here is a video of our experience.
The whole bar was full of tourists. It was a nice place and you could see the history in the menus and on the walls. It was a nice place to get a drink.
Be forewarned though it is EXPENSIVE. This city in general is expensive, but they really get you on these drinks. I think we paid $80 Sing for 2 cocktails and a bottle of water. And you didn't get to keep the glass!
You could also have a drink at the pool bar, but we wanted to be able to say "we had a Singapore Sling where it was invented!".
