My system for packing for a long trip ( more than 10 days) is to choose three colors. For instance, red, white and black. Have every item interchangable with the others. White top with black pants; red skirt with black top, etc. If you can find a print with those 3 colors, great. Have one pair of pants, one long skirt and one jacket so you can be dressy or sporty. Try to buy a lot of these at a $10 store. THE PLAN IS - the last four days of your trip, leave what you had on in the hotel room or Salvation Army box. You will be sick of them anyway. This way your suitcase is freed up to bring home souvenirs or it will just be lighter and no worry about weight restrictions.
1. Yes, If I go on a cruise I would pack a little more. Of course depending on how many days I go. If I go on a plane I would definitely pack light.
2. No I don't swear by any type of luggage I use any that is durable & reliable.
3. Can't without deodorant, toothpaste, baby powder & tooth brush.
4. No don't use a packing list.
5. Yes I always pack 1 month in advance. My roommate says I'm a ""weirdo""! Hey, at least I don't forget anything!! EVER!!

Being in the travel business as an International Tour Manager and CEO of the International Guide Academy in Denver, I am on the road a lot.
My advice to those we train as Tour Managers is simple. Put everything you think you need on the bed and put half of it back. Another way is to make two piles. One pile with what you definitely need and one pile with what would be nice to have. Only take the first "definitely need" pile.
I like Case Logic products. Most of their suitcases are light and their accessory bags for cameras, personal items, laptop, etc. are excellent.
If the trip is only for a few days get by with a carry-on. You save time in not having to wait for your bag at the arrival airport, it won't get lost, etc. Remember you can always buy your toothpaste, shampoo, etc. at your destination.
I travel quite often to and from Canada and U.S. I don't use a particular brand of luggage but like my "carry on" to be as light as possible. If it is heavy to start, it's going to be awkward to handle after it's packed...and being a senior lady usually travelling by myself, I've been fortunate there are kind gentlemen often ready to assist in putting it in the overhead storage. When possible I check all but a small carry-on. What I "can't live without" would be make up, a book to read on the plane and wait times in the airports. One tip is to put small items inside your shoes...saves space.

Shoes are heavy and bulky to pack.
Shoes are always the heavest to pack. I always Have one dressy shoe, one sandal (for warm weather boots for cold), and one tennis shoe. I will design my outfits around these shoes. Instead of the other way around.
Its cheaper to send some of your items UPS than to have an extra bag and pay $35. You do need to have a drop off point at your destination for the UPS delivery.
