With the increase in security throughout the world, travelling on vacation or for business has become quite a chore. Security checks in some countries (especially the USA) have become an issue for so many people. The TSA (the Transportation Security Administration) will inspect your carry on bags and your checked luggage, either randomly or if they feel there is a reason to go into your bag. They electronically scan every bag, however there are those times when they need to search your bag physically. If you have a lock on your bag they may cut it off unless it is an approved TSA Lock.
The TSA has worked with many companies and have developed a universal "master" key so they don't have to cut locks on bags. Look for locks with the Travel Sentry red diamond logo or the Safe Skies logo. I have listed only TSA Approved locks here.
These locks will deter the average thief but is not a way to keep your valuables safe. Use a hotel safe and always travel with your valuables on your person or in your carry on bag. Chances are however, that if a thief sees your bag with the lock on it, and a bag next to it without a lock on it, they will go straight for the one without the lock.
Just remember to look for the 2 symbols from Safe Skies or Travel Sentry. TSA agents will know that they can use their universal "key" and open your bags easily.
Also before you travel make sure that you check the security regulations for the countries you are visiting. Check with the consulate or the airline you are travelling with.
