South Africa is a country that everyone should visit.... I haven't stopped saying that since we returned in January, 2013. We can honestly say that this country is one of the most diverse, beautiful and exciting countries that we have ever visited.
We knew we would enjoy our time in South Africa (and Zambia and Botswana), but it exceeded our expectations 10 fold. We were invited into a friends home in Johannesburg for Christmas dinner, had an amazing tour through the historic Township of Soweto, spent a day playing with lions, visited a Joburg casino, toured Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula and Stellenbosch wine country, and spent New Years Eve in the incredible Fairmont Zimbali Resort. We then spent a week travelling through Zambia (where we had our first safari and checked out Victoria Falls) and Botswana on Safari.
We can't even begin to share with you the incredible sights we saw, people we met and animals and nature that we enjoyed, but we will sure try. Better yet, put South Africa, Botswana and Zambia on your bucket list. You won't regret it, we promise.
We spent the first 2 weeks of our trip in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Zimbali (near Durban) so we really got to see the diverseness of South Africa.
Here is a great introductory video we found for South Africa:
We visited Zambia, only because we wanted to see Victoria Falls. Pretty much everyone we talked to said that we had to take a couple of days and see Victoria Falls.
How could we resist? Victoria Falls are the rivals of Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada (90 minutes from where we live), so we made sure that we spent a couple of nights in Livingstone, Zambia.
We chose to stay with Wilderness Safaris at their camp Toka Leya. This camp, while only 12 km from Livingstone was incredible. It is located right on the Zambezi River.
Not only did we see Victoria Falls, but we saw dozens of hippos, elephants, monkeys, zebra, giraffes and warthogs. We were also treated to many babies as we were visiting in the summer. I have to tell you, a baby zebra or giraffe is one of the cutest things you will ever see!
Here is a video about Toka Leya:
After a couple of nights in Zambia, we hopped on a small plane and were off to Botswana. We chose to stay at Kings Pool Camp in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve in Northern Botswana.
This camp is beautiful, and the landscape was completely different then in Toka Leya. Kings Pool is located on the beautiful Linyanti River, at Kings Pool Lagoon. We have never seen so many hippos as we did here!
After a couple of nights here, again off on a small plane to spend our last 2 nights at Vumbura Plains Camp in the Okavango Delta.
Here is a great video that shows you what the Wilderness Safari Camps in Botswana are like, and what you can expect for a safari experience.
